June marks the beginning of Pride Month, a time to celebrate and support the LGBTQ+ community. To join in on the festivities, the award-winning narrative adventure game Tell Me Why will be available for free all month on Xbox and PC – a tradition in its third consecutive year. This heartwarming move showcases the game industry's commitment to inclusivity and diversifying representation.
Developed by Don't Nod, the same studio behind the acclaimed Life is Strange series, Tell Me Why was created in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios Publishing as an Xbox ecosystem exclusive. The game features the trans protagonist Tyler Ronin, with August Aiden Black, a trans voice actor, lending his voice to the character. Don't Nod worked closely with GLAAD during the game's development to ensure Tyler's story was told respectfully. In 2020, Tell Me Why won the Games for Impact award at The Game Awards.
Set in a snowy Alaskan fishing town, players navigate the troubled relationship between Tyler and his sister Alyson as they telepathically process childhood trauma. Although the game received a mixed reception upon its 2020 release, it marked a significant moment for the industry with its portrayal of a trans lead character. By making the game free for June, Tell Me Why has become a beacon of LGBTQ+ Pride in the Xbox world.
In a tweet announcing the free availability of the game, Tell Me Why also encouraged gamers to support the LGBTQ+ community through donations to local charities and trans creators. The tweet included links to the game on Xbox and Steam for fans to download. While unlikely that Tyler and Alyson's story will have a sequel, Don't Nod might use the Tell Me Why name to tell new stories featuring LGBTQ+ characters, as they've done in their Life is Strange series.
The free availability of Tell Me Why is just one example of how game studios are celebrating Pride Month. Other initiatives include Overwatch 2's in-game Pride parade event and Disney Dreamlight Valley's offering of in-game Pride t-shirts. As fans await more news on potential future titles from Don't Nod, they can enjoy and appreciate the inclusive and impactful narrative of Tell Me Why throughout June in honor of Pride Month.
