This article delves into the modern approach behind the display choice for the upcoming handheld gaming units. The recent showcase introduced two portable devices, and while there is excitement overall, one specific design element has generated discussion.
During the recent Xbox Games Showcase, enthusiasts learned that a portable gaming unit is arriving in two versions, one standard and one larger model. Although pricing and launch details remain under wraps, the hardware has received praise—except for one aspect that has caught some attention.
Observant fans noted that the screen uses an LCD panel rather than the more commonly lauded OLED. Whitson Gordon from the team behind ROG Ally provided insight into this decision. Their investigation revealed that incorporating Variable Refresh Rate technology, which helps eliminate tearing and ensures a smoother visual experience, proved challenging in combination with OLED technology.
The team explained that extensive research and prototyping were conducted on OLED once again this year. However, when combining OLED with the desired Variable Refresh Rate features, the performance did not meet their high standards. They made it clear that omitting this feature was not an option; in their view, a display lacking Variable Refresh Rate would not satisfy gaming needs as we approach 2025.
Additional factors factored heavily into the decision-making process, including power consumption and cost. LCD technology proved to be more efficient—drawing less power—and it presented a budget-friendly solution compared to OLED combined with Variable Refresh Rate.
Attention has also been given to aspects the audience values most in portable gaming devices. In surveys and feedback, several priorities were highlighted, including:
- Extended battery longevity
- Enhanced performance capabilities
- A more refined software experience
Later this year, the new handheld unit is set to debut. As more details emerge and hands-on reviews become available, we look forward to sharing further insights into this promising piece of portable gaming hardware.
