The director of Astro Bot expresses a desire for the game's numerous cameos to motivate younger players to explore the classics. This new platformer aims to spark interest in older titles among the younger audience.
Astro Bot pays homage to decades of gaming with over 150 VIP bots dressed as iconic figures from PlayStation’s flagship titles, such as God of War, Uncharted, and Horizon, as well as characters from the broader gaming universe. Series like Tomb Raider, Yakuza, and Street Fighter also make notable appearances.
It's likely that many players experiencing this delightful platformer may not have had the chance to engage with Sly Cooper or be familiar with LocoRoco. Director Nicola Doucet hopes to change that perspective. In a recent behind-the-scenes clip, Doucet mentioned a desire for younger gamers to discover these beloved characters and be inspired to explore their original games.
Astro Bot is packed with intriguing nods to franchises that have been dormant for years, with some levels offering more than just simple Easter eggs. For instance, one stage lets players take control of a Bot of War, wielding a boomerang axe, providing a brief glimpse into the uniqueness of certain series, potentially encouraging players to venture into the original titles.
The timing of the platformer's release is noteworthy. PlayStation has recently shown a renewed focus on reviving its classic library for the PS5, with examples like the PSP strategy RPG Jeanne d'Arc, the Jak & Daxter series, and the upcoming Secret Agent Clank, set to release on September 17. It's even inspired people to purchase titles like the original Ape Escape after seeing the charming chaos in early levels.
A nostalgic response to Astro Bot is understandable, even if players are not old enough to have experienced Ape Escape firsthand. Doucet has voiced intentions to reclaim the essence of the space that PlayStation Studios once held before many transitioned to more mature, hyper-realistic titles, and it feels intuitive that players would be drawn to the older games that shaped Astro’s journey.
